Character Note
This work explores the Japanese word emoji (絵文字), meaning picture characters or image writing.
The character 絵 includes the 糸 (ito) radical, associated with thread, silk, and woven material. The work draws from the characters 絵 (e, picture), 文 (mo, writing), and 字 (ji, character), while incorporating the hiragana form え (e). The composition plays with the kakijun (書き順), or prescribed order of writing Japanese characters, with individual strokes repeated and accumulated into a continuous sequence of marks.
